چکیده
The instability and dewetting of bounded liquid films at the nanoscale are shown to strongly depend on thermal fluctuations. In this work, fluctuation-driven a chemically heterogeneous substrate is investigated both by stochastic lubrication equation (SLE), which models fluctuations with white noise, molecular dynamics (MD). Linear analysis for SLE, considering slip intermolecular forces substrates, employed derive spectrum capillary waves their corresponding interface roughness, then quantitatively confirmed numerical solutions SLE MD. found be enhanced forces, latter becoming dominant toward final rupture. Moreover, results suggest that can approximated as homogeneous one effective (averaged) lengths Hamaker constants forces. gradients due heterogeneities not affect significantly.

Wetting films on chemically heterogeneous substrates.
Based on a microscopic density functional theory, we investigate the morphology of thin liquid-like wetting films adsorbed on substrates endowed with well-defined chemical heterogeneities. As paradigmatic cases we focus on a single chemical step and on a single stripe. In view of applications in microfluidics, the accuracy of guiding liquids by chemical microchannels is discussed. Finally we gi...

Chemically patterned surfaces are of significant interest in the context of microfluidic applications. Miniaturization of such devices will eventually lead to structures on the nano-scale. Whereas on the micron scale purely macroscopic descriptions of liquid flow are valid, on the nanometer scale long-ranged inter-molecular interactions, thermal fluctuations such as capillary waves, and finally...
متن کاملDroplet spreading on chemically heterogeneous substrates.
Consider the spreading dynamics of a two-dimensional droplet over chemically heterogeneous substrates. Assuming small slopes and strong surface tension effects, a long-wave expansion of the Stokes equations yields a single evolution equation for the droplet thickness. The contact line singularity is removed by assuming slip at the liquid-solid interface. The chemical nature of the substrate is ...
متن کاملInstability of Gravity Driven Flow of Liquid Crystal Films
As the name suggests, ‘liquid crystals’ exist in an intermediate state between a liquid and a solid. The term may be misleading however, they are not a crystal, and they need not be a liquid. Liquid crystals exist all around us in everyday life in plastics, crude oil, lipstick, and many other places [2]. Their most widely known industrial application is in Liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which ...
متن کاملGravity-driven thin liquid films over topographical substrates.
We investigate the time-dependent evolution of thin liquid films over inclined substrates using a multi-component lattice Boltzmann algorithm. Substrates with and without grooves are considered and the effects of the inclination angle on the dynamics and the coating of the substrates are studied. Our results indicate that the dynamics is enhanced and the ridge height and its displacement are in...
